Bio
Dom joined the federal court in 1997, following 15 years as a freelance
reporter and principal. He reported depositions and meetings around the
world, from Southeast Asia to Cairo. In 1983 he retired after 20 years
as a New York State official, and now serves a busy court in the Eastern
District of New York, Central Islip, New York.
In June of 2007 he was one of 40 American Ambassadors who attended a
joint conference of United States and Chinese reporters in Beijing. In
behalf of the American delegates, Dom delivered the primary address to
this historic international group.
He was founder, director, and instructor at the Verbatim School of Court
Reporting for more than a decade, and today is a court reporting board
advisor to the Long Island Business Institute. His monographs have
appeared in reporting magazines published by NCRA, the New York State
Court Reporters Association, and USCRA.
Dom is also a shorthand historian, with a prized collection of shorthand
books and writing machines. His research into the history of shorthand
will shortly be exhibited permanently in his courthouse for the world to
observe.
His reporting credentials include being three-time NYS Shorthand Speed
Contest Champion (Perfect Paper 280 wpm Q&A), and World Shorthand Speed
Champion (300 wpm, 5 minutes, 24 errors) in 1981 – a record which still
stands.
He was one of the first East Coast reporters ever to use a computer for
transcription, and has testified as a reporting expert several times
during his career.
Dom has served as a reporting consultant to several transcription
endeavors, and assisted developers during the groundbreaking creation of
Case Catalyst and the Windows version of CaseView.
His wife, Anneliese, is a freelance court reporter, and his son Matthew
is a favorite at USCRA conventions. His three grandchildren (Spencer,
Pierson, and Sophia Marie) reside in Michigan with Dom’s oldest son
Duane and wonderful wife, Courtney. Trent, his next oldest, is a
world-class professional lacrosse player for Italy. And son Todd,
married to Desiree, is studying to be a pilot.
In case it is not obvious, Dom loves the reporting profession.
